First off, I don’t know Danny Ferry personally. For all I know he could be a great guy to know–a loving and compassionate friend, husband, etc.
But in cinema we talk about "revealing character." The filmmaker doens’t have much time to show the audience who a character is, so we get what are referred to as ‘save-the-cat’ moments–small but noble actions that give a sense of the hero’s personality. For the villians we have the opposite–glimpse of meaness or ant-‘save-the-cat-moments.
