Van Jones Resigns. A *victory* for racist lies; a loss for our country

Van Jones resigned last night.

My heart is heavy today.

Van is a personal friend and one of the most inspiring and effective visionaries of our time.

I am almost speechless about the right-wing racist attack machine. It's jaw-dropping to see the venomous comments from hate-filled know-nothings all over the web, spreading lies and distortions, calling Van a "racist" and "avowed communist."

(Most of this "communist" nonsense comes from one paragraph in a highly problematic profile of Van from the East Bay Express a couple years ago, the point of which was how Van has moved far beyond his youthful radicalism, and embraced market-based solutions to ecological and social problems.)

I am disgusted, saddened and worried about our country.

The hypocrisy of the Republicans, the right and the media is overwhelming. Do I even have to mention how many right-wing office-holders have said things 10x worse than Van's statements? Everything Van said was accurate, if occasionally provocative to a mainstream culture unaccustomed to critical thinking.

Van Jones is a hero, working for the well-being of all people. It is unimaginable to see him slandered as a "racist" by people who have no idea what they're talking about.

I am proud to stand with Van and to call him a friend.

My heart is very heavy today.

I have tried to make it my creed to work for change with love, but today I am finding it very difficult to live up to that ideal. The laughter of the neo-conservative elite that has perpetrated this outrage echos with the sounds of ancient Rome. Nero fiddled as the city burned. That is what our culture is doing today, we live in lies and denial as the planet burns. An even bigger outrage is the silence of the Democrats. Once again they have shown themselves impotent to stand up for what is right. "Did they fill the streets with protest when democracy was stolen?" Not even! Van Jones did nothing but express himself in the finest traditions of American democracy and he was railroaded. We now must redouble our efforts. It has become clear to me that we cannot rely on Washington for anything. Our movement must grassroots and loud. It's 3:23 in the morning and it's time we made our great great grand children proud.

Proverbs 1:20-22 Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. At the busiest corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

i was so sad to hear Van Jones resigned. my heart just sank. my hope is being pummeled. Why are we caving in to the greedy, the ignorant and/or hateful? Didn't 51 percent of say YES to hope (or at least NO to hate?) 13.7 billion years later and where do we go from here?

Attempts to destroy our cultural creative geniuses like Van seems to sadly continue. Let it all the more strengthen our own stance, let our disgust give us more energy to speak out and to also embody the gifts he has brought forth. Positive change is ever so slow in the midst of ignorance and hate but we are forever changed and transformed by the gifts of wisdom from people like Van. Slander is a serious set back because so many people are unable to really think for themselves so they without question believe in the flatness of what they hear. The movement towards a viable future, however is in many ways strengthened, because when things like this happen, we are reminded that we cannot be complacent.

Sitting in my home here in Sapporo, Japan, I am deeply disturbed and worried about what I see and hear coming from America. I am not alone here. The right wing hysteria and gleeful lying and hate-mongering are worrisome to people here. I have no respect for Beck, Hannity, Gingrich and their ilk, whom I regard as a bunch of schoolyard bullies who've never grown up. They need to be called out and called out regularly.

Warmest regards
